What is Physics?

Archimedes (ca. 235 bc) b. Syracuse
Concerning levers
"Give me a place to stand, and I will move the Earth."

What does this mean? Hell, what is science in general? The principle of science that describes and predicts everything in the known universe is Physics. Straight from the dictionary, the definition of Physics clearly states:

"The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms."

Are you watching TV right now? The light and sound along with the electricity used to power that TV are all described by Physics. Take a deep breathe. The air that you just breathed in, is Physics (along with some chemistry of course). What I'm trying to get at is that physics is all around you, it's inescapable. But that doesn't mean you should be scared, it just means that you should be enlightened. When people hear the word physics, a sigh of dread and thoughts of horror crawl into their minds. But in fact, Physics is quite easy once you understand the concepts. And it can actually be fun when you understand how it is applied.

Roller coaster: "The Demon"
A roller coaster is a perfect example of a "fun" way to understand Physics. The way things move and how we study them is called Kinematics. I really don't think now is the appropriate time to get into Kinematics, so we'll save that for another day.

As this is my first post I would like to describe a little bit about myself. I am currently enrolled as a Physics major at Eastern Illinois University. I really enjoy physics as a whole, but I'd really like to narrow my field into astronomy or something along the lines of the study of the cosmos. I believe there is something out there that we as humans have yet to discover! But it may never be found if no one puts the effort to try and achieve that goal. I want to one day achieve that goal and find other planets or just do anything with outer space.

Anyway enough about me, I will do my best to update this blog not only with factual information about physics, but I will also show you awesome things about. Anyway, this is your Daily Dose of Physics, signing out.
